This is me

Hello, all, I'm Alex. I've made this website to offer some assistance to all you budding psychologists who want some information and clarity around the convoluted, messy, and expensive pathway to registration. I suppose this is specifically targeted towards those uni students who are at whatever stage of their academic career and want a bit of information around the road that awaits.

The reason behind this idea is that, having been through this process myself, I spent a great deal of time trying to navigate and understand these complex guidelines and trying to comprehend what was expected of me at each stage of my university (and post-university) career. I found that, although there is no shortage of websites and services targeted towards resolving this very issue, they all come at a pretty substantial cost. Not sure about you all, but my purse strings were particularly tight as a university student so I couldn't always afford to pay for these services (also information should be free to access, particularly in a field where there is such a need for more qualified people, but that's another conversation).

While we all know uni is great blah blah, with the theory blah blah, I've found that they somewhat lack in their delivery of comprehensive information about the practicality of actually becoming a psychologist. This is where I come in.
I wanted to make a service that is free to access for anyone (university student or otherwise) where you can come, access the most current guidelines/codes, and ask me some questions. There's a discussion board that you can access and post any questions you might have although, fair warning, as I'm gainfully employed, I won't always be checking the board so my responses might be somewhat delayed. I also have a fortnightly Zoom call where people can come and ask questions, get real-time responses (dependent on my internet connection), and just generally commiserate.

I've found that study can often be pretty lonely, particularly if you're studying online, so part of my aim in this is to connect people and form a bit of a network between you all. Plus, an added benefit, is that once you are all registered, you'll have connections to discuss tricky cases with - believe me when I say that you'll need this more than anything.
A little about me I guess, I completed my master's of professional psychology last year and am working through my internship year at the moment. Before all of that, though, I worked as a case manager for a social services agency in the child-protection sector, which exposed me to some pretty humbling circumstances. A number of the families that I worked with were on the lower end of the SES spectrum, barely making ends meet, and I have to think that this has contributed to my current perspective on the state of the world. I think, more and more, I am seeing that people are using this field, and those adjacent, as a means of making a quick dime, and we're losing sight of the purpose of psychology. More than anything, I want to be able to help people overcome the challenges that life throws at them, and I'm not sure that charging mega-bucks to do so is the best approach. I think that university is one such challenge and so, if I can offer a free, hopefully helpful platform for people, then I'll be one happy camper.

I do need to say that this platform should not be considered a source of formal advice, I am not a board-approved supervisor so if you are doing your internship, this can't count towards your hours (sorry), and this isn't a counselling/therapy service - purely information and discussion. There we go, now my obligations to AHPRA are fulfilled, lets chat.
